Itβs an amazing episode - that makes me hate people. Everyone turns into their absolute worst selves! Especially Jethroβs parents are the type of people I really canβt stand... Aggressive, trying to hide their fear and insecurity behind a mask of righteousness. They treat Jethro like crap, like his thoughts and feelings donβt matter at all, and then canβt understand why he wouldnβt choose to spend time with them. Still, the episode is great, and the Midnight entity is pretty much the perfect enemy for this Doctor, because Ten TALKS. Thatβs how they deal with things! They think out loud, they use words to distract, to comfort, to help... Theyβre just so very verbal, itβs their greatest asset - and against this foe, itβs their greatest weakness. Imagine this episode with Nine instead of Ten. Wouldnβt have worked! Had to be Ten. The guest cast is excellent (considering how much they manage to piss me off every single time!), and the script is pretty much perfect because itβs so minimalistic.

2019-09-05 05:15:29 +0000 UTCThis is a really strong one, however I remember at the time being in two minds, that it felt a bit 'show-offy' from a writers perspective, like it was more of an exercise than episode, but over time Ive let that go and appreciate it for the Doctor Who meets Twilight Zone gem it is. This is conspicuously a bottle show, and that usually means a money saving unambitious 'stuck in a lift together' equivalent, but this is a triumph. In many ways its the inversion of Blink. Scary looking monster? A monster you cant see. So fast you cant outrun it? No where to run to. No Doctor? ALL Doctor. Earth? Space. Happy Enging? Dark Ending.
