New Ambience: "Dark Future"

Greetings Patrons,

I had every intention of creating a space-based, sci-fi ambience this week, but sometimes, the thing you start with, isn't the thing you end up with.

I had this idea for a kind of gritty hard sci-fi vibe, something you might hear on 'The Expanse', which I've been watching lately. I wanted dirty booster sounds, and old, twisting metal. The sounds of soon-to-be-retired tech that's been patched together one too many times.

The more I listened and the more I manipulated the sounds, I realized that it was becoming more terrestrial than space. It's this type of exploration that I love about designing sounds for this website. Had this been a commercial assignment, this realization would have resulted in me abandoning the sound as it had strayed from the original creative brief. But, because I was free to explore wherever this was taking me, I continued to see where it would take me.

The answer of course, was cyberpunk. Cyberpunk is what happens when sci-fi becomes tragically earthbound.

Dark Future, as I now call this sound, is a ragged, futuristic ambience that can still be used in sci-fi stories. It will also work for dark modern stories as well. In fact - and I keep saying this - just ignore what I think and give it a listen yourself.
